Two specialist English sniffer dogs were summoned to Praia da Luz in August 2007 to try and help work out what had happened to Madeleine McCann. The springer spaniels, named Eddie and Keela, and their handler Martin Grime had been handpicked by the UK police force's national search expert, Mark Harrison. During their intensive search the two dogs made 13 alerts in several key locations of interest in the case.

The alert is given by her parents after dinner when, on returning home, they do not find their daughter asleep in her bed. At the Ocean Club, in Praia da Luz, Algarve, guests gather and help in the search for little Maddie. The Guardia Nacional Republicana is alerted and at around midnight the Judiciaria's picket line is notified. Immediately, the coordinator of the Judiciary Police, Gonçalo Amaral, takes command of the operation.
