Witness Statement<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piedade Costa Mendes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Date: 2007-05-09<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Occupation: Security Guard<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Place of Work: OC<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She comes to the process as a witness. She has been an employee at the OC resort since 1987. Although her work contract describes the functions of security guard, in reality her work consists of the management\/maintenance of one of the resort’s swimming pools. Her working hours are from 10.00 to 18.00 with Saturdays and Sundays off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked, she says she has heard about the disappearance of Madeleine, a situation she heard about on Friday 4th May when she dropped her son at the creche and saw colleagues distributing leaflets with information about the disappearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The witness says that during the days before the disappearance she did not have any contact with Madeleine or her family. She only found out who these people were when she saw them on the news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked, the witness says that it is normal to walk frequently to the area adjacent to the location of the apartment the girl disappeared from because she would often have to go and fetch ice for the swimming pool bar or fetch towels from the laundry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When asked whether she saw anything or anyone strange asking about guests or children or about the functioning of the resort, she says she has no knowledge of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She says she is not aware of any of her colleagues having problems of a criminal nature, nor vices. She does not know of any strange people having frequented the resort. She says that a lot of new members of staff have been contracted recently and does not know what kind of people they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Concerning other strange incidents at the resort, such as robberies inside the buildings, the witness says that during the winter she heard about a case of robbery but does not know the details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has heard nothing that could clarify the disappearance of Madeleine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
